Lucy-Ann walked slowly along the pavement that led to Manselâs estate. For the last few months she had nearly skipped along the route, but now she was plodding, feeling worn out from the heat of the May early evening sun. Sheâd so enjoyed the last few months; it was great being part of a couple after so many years of being on her own or having disappointingly short, or disappointingly disappointing relationships. Sheâd begun to think that it was her lot to be single and that she just wasnât cut out to have a partner and although she enjoyed her own company, there had quite obviously been things missing in her life.
But Mansel, well Mansel⦠He made her giggle as if she were a teenager at school. His joke in the Italian restaurant about the pine nuts looking like the ticks on her rabbit had made her giggle for the whole three courses and the waiterâs disdain had just made her snigger all the more. His crocodile head jockstrap had diffused the tension the first time theyâd made love and his hat with an axe through it made every walk by the river a scream.
And now she was going to have to ruin it all. Make it serious. A relationship that was built on comedy and light-heartedness would now need deep discussion and responsibility.
She felt sick, whether from the worry about what she was going to have to say, or from the hormones sent haywire by the little life inside her, she did not know.
It seemed so cruel: theyâd spent, what ten nights together and now this. It was true, their efforts at contraception had been somewhat haphazard, especially when sheâd put that Minnie Mouse dress on again, but surely a little spontaneity didnât demand a lifetime commitment to someone? She smiled again when she thought about the second time theyâd slept together. He had told her that he used to have a large penis, but he lost it in a poker game ... He always made her laugh and now she might ruin it.
Heâd gushingly told her he loved her on their second date and sheâd laughed and said that he didnât even know her properly and that he couldnât say things like that. Heâd gone quiet, embarrassed by his actions. Heâd not said it since, and she felt it was because he wasnât always sure about how to conduct himself, so he had played it safe. Her pride had stopped her saying it to him - as she was an old-fashioned girl and surely the guy should say it properly first â but she knew that she loved him and the not saying it didnât mean that it wasnât felt. Although her instinct told her that he did love her, and love her a lot, now being in this position made her question everything that wasnât written down and signed by two independent witnesses.
She mulled over the past two days. Her periods were usually irregular and therefore she never usually took much notice of their timing.
